The imaginative rendition of the end of Robert Goodale from the Illustrated Police News.

Although acquitted of any blame, the ‘Goodale Mess’ haunted Berry for the rest of his career and probably for the rest of his life. Berry executed a total of 131 condemned criminals, both men and women, in a career spanning seven years. In 1892 he retired, and after a brief lecture tour, found religion. Berry ‘gave himself to Jesus’ and began visiting evangelical churches as a preacher. Charles Mackie, author of the Norfolk historian’s essential Norfolk Annals, had been present at the execution as a reporter on the Norfolk Chronicle. He recalled the execution when surveying his career many years later. With some pride he declared he had been present at what could justifiably be called ‘the last judicial beheading in England’.
